<img alt=" photo kefirpin_zpscae23516.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Kefir/kefirpin_zpscae23516.jpg" /></div>
<br />
<br />
Most stores sell this delicious probiotic beverage for $3.50 to $5.00 a quart. I make my own for 0.55¢ a quart. Make great fruit smoothies, use in baking, or drink it straight. You have a fresh batch every 24-48 hours.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo kefir1_zps85c53db0.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Kefir/kefir1_zps85c53db0.jpg" /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
Step 1:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Acquire Kefir grains* from a friend or sometimes they are available on Amazon or Craigslist. If you receive from a friend, they will probably come to you in some finished Kefir, which you will strain using a colander with smaller holes (1/16" or so). The liquid that goes through the strainer is finished and ready to mix with fruits or whatever you want to do with it. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo kefir2_zps034041a3.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Kefir/kefir2_zps034041a3.jpg" /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
Step 2:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The material that does not go through the strainer is the kefir grains. Place them into the container you are using to make a new batch. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo Kefir3_zps350bdff5.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Kefir/Kefir3_zps350bdff5.jpg" /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
Step 3. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Warm the milk to about 77°F. Use fat-free, or whatever you want. Pour into jar with Kefir grains and cover. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo Kefir4_zps21797790.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Kefir/Kefir4_zps21797790.jpg" /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
Step 4. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Keep the covered container of grains and milk in a draft-free, room temperature, out of sunlight setting. In 24-48 hours you should notice that it has set up, or thickened when you gently shake the container. Pour contents through the strainer and repeat this process to start your next batch</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo kefir5_zps33302e15.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Kefir/kefir5_zps33302e15.jpg" /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
*Kefir grains are not from grain. Grain is simply a reference to their granular shape. They also resemble small pieces of cauliflower or cottage cheese.</div>

<span style="background-color: transparent;"><span style="font-size: 12px;">I started volunteering with Outdoors for All in the 2009/2010 Season. Before Chiropractic, I had actually taught skiing for four years and loved it! My sister had volunteered with the program before and I had heard wonderful things…I just didn’t know if I had time for it.</span></span></div>
<br />
Cianna was one of my first participants. Honestly, I fell in love with that girl from day one! She would sing to me, recite cartoons, smile and laugh and always ask me “where are we going?”…I would tell her and her answer was always a cheerful “ok” or “sure” Sure we would run into challenges, endurance was a big issue for her and she would get tired…all of us do…skiing is hard work! Sometimes she wouldn’t want to do something…so she would distract me with a Hug!!! We would take breaks, chit-chat and get back out on the snow. Cianna is honestly one of the brightest, happiest, and positive individuals I know and I am blessed just to know her and get to spend time with her. She not only lights up my face, but everyone’s she meets.<br />
<br />
Over the last four years Cianna has progressed from skiing 1-3 runs on the magic carpet to last weekend skiing 5+ runs on the beginner chair lift! Pure awesomeness! She’s also progressed from needing ropes attached to her skis to help her turn and stop to being able to turn and stop on her own with minimal support…I ski backwards helping her with turns and stopping when she needs it…most the time she doesn’t! She just likes having me there! The important thing is not how fast she’s progressed, it’s the quality of the time we’ve shared together getting out moving her body, giving her brain positive feedback and showing her what she’s capable of! She’s done so well! She loves to ski and I can see her confidence improving at each lesson!<br />
<br />
Where most may give up or decide not to try; Outdoors for All trains their volunteers well and we break it down piece by piece, skill by skill, run by run. One thing at a time…safety first, fun second and hey learning something at the end of the day is a plus!<br />
<br />
Impossible or even “hard” is often a belief rather than fact but yet we treat it as factual. Outdoors for All breaks these chains and dreams of and accomplishes what others may see as hard or impossible. Yet, the ability was there all along. Robert M. Hensel is quoted as saying “I choose not to place “DIS”, in my ability.” This is what Outdoors for All is all about. This is why I support them AND this is why I continue to “have time” for Cianna and all the people Outdoors for All serves…even three months after the birth of my second child!<br />
<br />
From me and Cianna to you, Thank you for supporting us and Outdoors for All!<br />

<span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">I was asked by the

about probiotics. While this blog post will in no way cover the breadth and
depth of the subject, it will summarize the most pertinent facts and ideas to
keep in mind when considering probiotic use.
The following are questions consistently asked of me by patients, and my
answers based on research and experience. </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;">What is a probiotic? <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 9pt;"> <span style="font-weight: normal;"> </span></span><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">A probiotic, in very general terms, is a group of bacteria
in a food or supplement that offer benefit to the host. From the time we leave
our mothers during birth, we begin to be colonized with bacteria.<a href="file:///C:/Users/FrontDesk/Downloads/Probiotics%20blog%20.docx#_edn1" name="_ednref1" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Mincho"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[i]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a>
Over time, these microbes begin to constitute our <i>flora</i> or <i>microbiome</i>, the
collective of bacteria completely unique to each of us. No two people have the
exact same flora in their digestive tract, even identical twins. Our bodies are teeming with microbes and this
normally doesn’t cause disease. Furthermore, these bacteria have been shown to biosynthesize
vitamin K (needed for blood clotting),<a href="file:///C:/Users/FrontDesk/Downloads/Probiotics%20blog%20.docx#_edn2" name="_ednref2" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Mincho"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[ii]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a>

<b><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;">What is a prebiotic? <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>

<span style="font-size: 9pt;"> <span style="font-weight: normal;"> </span></span><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Prebiotics are basically food for the bacteria of our
digestive tract. Like any organism, our gut flora needs fuel to survive, and
these prebiotic foods or food components have been shown in research to cause
shifts in the gut microbiome toward health rather than disease. Research has
demonstrated that prebiotics can have an effect on immune system function,<a href="file:///C:/Users/FrontDesk/Downloads/Probiotics%20blog%20.docx#_edn5" name="_ednref5" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Mincho"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[v]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a>

It should be noted that some prebiotics – namely fructooligosaccharides or FOS
contained in some probiotic formulas – can exacerbate symptoms of irritable and
inflammatory bowel diseases and may need be avoided in these populations. </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"> <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;">Why can’t I get probiotics from my food alone? <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 9pt;"> <span style="font-weight: normal;"> </span></span><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">In short, you may be able to. If you’re eating a lot of
fermented and unpasteurized foods, you may be able to get some pre- and
probiotics that encourage good gut health. Unfortunately, however, widespread
use of pesticides, antibiotics, herbicides, chemical sprays, and pasteurization
limits the amount of healthy microbes that survive on our food. With mass
production of crops over the last century, the above processes are becoming
more and more necessary to prevent overgrowth of harmful bacteria on produce.
But the consequence is less naturally occurring probiotics in our daily
meals. </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;">How much yogurt would I have to eat per day to get a
good dose of probiotics? <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 9pt;"> <span style="font-weight: normal;"> </span></span><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">That depends on a lot of factors. First, it depends on
what yogurt (or other probiotic food) you’re eating. Second, it depends on your
diagnosis or what you’re trying to treat. For general health, a good dose of
probiotics is about 10 billion organisms or colony-forming units (CFUs) per day.
On average, a cup of yogurt contains probiotic organisms numbering only into
the millions. So contrary to the claims of television commercials, yogurt isn’t
exactly providing the therapeutic dose needed to deliver health benefits. Does
this mean you shouldn’t eat your fair share of organic, cultured dairy
products? No. It simply means that in times of imbalance or when trying to
achieve a certain health goal, you may need to supplement. </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;">Does the brand of my probiotic really matter? <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"> <span style="font-weight: normal;"> Yes. A </span></span><span style="font-size: 9pt; font-weight: normal;">recent
report by ConsumerLab.com found that out of 19 probiotics tested, five
contained only 16 percent to 56 percent of the listed amounts of organisms.<a href="file:///C:/Users/FrontDesk/Downloads/Probiotics%20blog%20.docx#_edn8" name="_ednref8" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[viii]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a>
In my practice, I often see patients who take discount supplements with no
benefit, and then try a high quality brand that ultimately changes their health
for the better. It’s so important to find supplement companies that are devoted
to producing pure products rather than simply to making profits. These high quality
supplements may be more expensive in the short-term, but buying them ensures
that you’re getting therapeutic doses of nutrients, vitamins, and – in the case
of probiotics – helpful rather than harmful bacteria. Simply put: I don’t want
my patients wasting money on products that don’t contain what’s written on the
label, and that goes for probiotics as well. </span><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<b><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;">What kind of probiotics should I use after I have taken

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 9pt;"> <span style="font-weight: normal;"> </span></span><span style="font-size: 9pt; font-weight: normal;">My short answer: a high quality brand probiotic with a
wide spectrum of strains. Antibiotics, while necessary in certain situations,
are not selective about which bacteria they kill; the result can be a host of
health problems from destruction of our healthy gut flora. Make sure that your
probiotic contains <i>Lactobacillus</i> and <i>Bifidobacterium</i>, the two most-researched
strains for post-antibiotic therapy. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;">Do strains of probiotics really matter? <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"> <span style="font-weight: normal;"> Yes and no. The evidence on this subject is still new
and constantly changing. There is evidence that supplementing with a single
strain of beneficial bacteria encourage other helpful strains in the gut grow
and thrive.<a href="file:///C:/Users/FrontDesk/Downloads/Probiotics%20blog%20.docx#_edn9" name="_ednref9" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Mincho"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[ix]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a>
Emerging research is showing that certain strains of bacteria may be able to
confer more benefit in people of certain blood types.<a href="file:///C:/Users/FrontDesk/Downloads/Probiotics%20blog%20.docx#_edn10" name="_ednref10" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Mincho"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[x]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a>
Research also suggests that certain strains are more beneficial to our

modulation of calming neurotransmitter receptors in the case of <i>Lactobacillus rhamnosus</i>. <a href="file:///C:/Users/FrontDesk/Downloads/Probiotics%20blog%20.docx#_edn11" name="_ednref11" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Mincho"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[xi]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">While
we do want to pay attention to strains in probiotic supplements, we also have
to remember that our bodies are basically made of bacteria. It is estimated
that our bodies are made up of less of our <i>own</i>
cells than the bacteria contained solely in our digestive tracts. <i>Candida</i>, <i>Streptococcus</i>, <i>Staphylococcus</i>,
even <i>Clostridium</i> and <i>E.coli </i>live on and in us all the time.
Furthermore, they perform vital functions to the human body until they are
allowed to overgrow and cause symptoms. The goal in most cases of probiotic
supplementation is to shift the <i>balance</i>
of organisms, rather than to effect individual strains of bacteria.</span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<b><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;">Do my probiotics really need to be refrigerated? <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"> <span style="font-weight: normal;"> Possibly. Many probiotic labels say that the bottles
should be refrigerated. In requiring refrigeration, companies hope to maintain
close to the number of CFUs of bacteria that were originally placed in the
bottle at the packing date. In other words, these companies are trying to keep
the number of <i>living </i>microbes as
close to the number on the label over time. For this reason, I always tell my
patients to find a probiotic supplement that lists the number of CFUs or
organisms on the bottle; it’s a sign that the company operates under quality
practices. If you’d like to take this a step further, you can call the
supplement company you’re interested in and ask them about CFUs in their
probiotics at expiration. So at minimum, you’ll be receiving that many <i>living </i>organisms per capsule up until
expiration. Many companies will not give you this information; my advice would
be to avoid products from these companies. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;">While
CFU and refrigeration labeling can be a sign of a quality supplement, research
isn’t as clear as to the reasoning behind this recommendation. There is </span><span style="font-size: 9.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">evidence that non-living and
even components of probiotic strains may offer health benefits to the host.<a href="file:///C:/Users/FrontDesk/Downloads/Probiotics%20blog%20.docx#_edn14" name="_ednref14" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Mincho"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[xiv]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a> If

<b><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;">Does gut health really have an effect on overall
health? <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"> <span style="font-weight: normal;"> We now know that gut bacteria do impact our overall
health, but we aren’t yet sure how to accurately study the <i>entire microbiome </i>of one’s digestive system. In order to learn
about varying strains of beneficial and harmful bacteria, researchers either
have to isolate single strains and implant them into animals born and raised in
germ-free environments, or try strains of probiotics in groups of people with
certain conditions. The problem with the former animal study scenario is
generalizability; in other words, the results of these studies in animals may
not be useful or applicable to humans and may not indicate the true effect of a
bacterial strain in a normal, flora-colonized human intestine. The problem with
the latter, human studies is that of individuality; as stated previously, each
and every person has their own unique microbiome as a product of environmental
effects, diet, and genetics. These human subjects, although sharing a diagnosis
with one another, may or may not benefit from certain probiotic strains due to
individual variability of their intestinal flora. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-size: 9.0pt;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Despite
the hurdles to be overcome in research design, there is emerging evidence of a
gut-brain axis. In medical school, we learn that the gut has its own nervous
system called the enteric nervous system. This branch of the nervous system is
much more intertwined with the overall (central and autonomic) nervous system
than we had previously thought, necessitating a new branch of specialized
medicine called neurogastroenterology. This field studies the connection
between the brain and the gut; we are finding that the same neurotransmitters
(chemicals our brain and nerves use to communicate) we target in drug therapies
for depression and anxiety also have effects in the intestines. Not
surprisingly, the health of the gut can also lead to effects on the brain and,
hence, our behavior and emotions.<a href="file:///C:/Users/FrontDesk/Downloads/Probiotics%20blog%20.docx#_edn15" name="_ednref15" title=""><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Mincho"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[xv]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a>

<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: 9.0pt;">Dr. Bethany Glynn is a
naturopathic primary care physician along with Dr. Bizzy Riley at Naturopathic
Clinic of Issaquah and Thrive Supplements. While she specializes in pediatric
and adolescent care, she especially enjoys helping families living with autism,
anxiety, and ADHD. Dr. Glynn is passionate about the connection between the
body and mind, not stopping at a diagnosis but determining the underlying
physiological or emotional cause of one’s imbalance. In practice, she
accomplishes this process with patients through a combination of lab assessment
of nutrient deficiencies, genetic testing, nutritional and diet therapy,
biofeedback, counseling, and homeopathy. For more information on her practice

<a href="http://s1364.photobucket.com/user/snoqualmiechiro/media/Almond%20Milk/photo5_zpsb6456857.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img alt=" photo photo5_zpsb6456857.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Almond%20Milk/photo5_zpsb6456857.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What you'll need:<br />
1 Cup Almonds</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3 Cups Water</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Food Processor</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Clean Towel, Cheesecloth, or Nut Milk Bag</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo DSC_0430_edit_zpsb3a2a962.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Almond%20Milk/DSC_0430_edit_zpsb3a2a962.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I read both that you should and shouldn't soak the almonds overnight, I chose not to since I </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
was too impatient. Blend the almonds and water in the food processor. My ninja was a little too </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
small for that amount, so I had to gradually add the water so it didn't overflow.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo DSC_0432_edit_zpscfa4bd42.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Almond%20Milk/DSC_0432_edit_zpscfa4bd42.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Blend until it reaches a frothy milk consistency.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo DSC_0434_edit_zps1f0b0750.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Almond%20Milk/DSC_0434_edit_zps1f0b0750.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Strain through your material of choice. I used a clean dish towel, but I'm planning on </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
cheesecloth next time.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo DSC_0439_edit_zps7deabf6a.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Almond%20Milk/DSC_0439_edit_zps7deabf6a.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo DSC_0438_edit_zpseb278e9e.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Almond%20Milk/DSC_0438_edit_zpseb278e9e.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo DSC_0445_edit_zps6752ca62.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/DSC_0445_edit_zps6752ca62.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now, you can use the pulp to make almond meal!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo DSC_0442_edit_zpsd7f7cc08.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Almond%20Milk/DSC_0442_edit_zpsd7f7cc08.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Place parchment paper on a baking sheet and spread the meal evenly. Cook at 170 degrees </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
for about 2 hours. Pulse dry meal in the processor until a flour consistency. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" photo DSC_0446_edit_zps67b25f8a.jpg" border="0" src="http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r739/snoqualmiechiro/Almond%20Milk/DSC_0446_edit_zps67b25f8a.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
Are you looking to improve your health, get more energy, or maintain weight loss? Do you want to look better and feel better than you ever have before?<br />
<br />
Here are 4 easy steps to follow that can make this “New Year” your healthiest year ever!<br />
1. Find a realistic plan and stick with.<br />
2. Eat breakfast. This is weight loss secret #1 and you need to take it serious.<br />
3. Increase movement – 100/100<br />
4. Get help and support, you are not alone on this journey.<br />
<br />
Find a plan you can follow: When finding a plan that will work for you, be realistic. If you tend to jump in with both feet only to find out you’ve done too much too fast, then it is time to try a different approach. <br />
<br />
Be realistic - ask yourself, how much time do I have to work out? How many days a week can I make it to the gym? Write your answers out. Putting it down on paper makes your commitment that much more real. Keep it where you can see it! <br />
<br />
Try going to bed 30 minutes early so you can wake up 30 minutes early to work out. Do this 5 days a week and you will have results. Do cardio one day and strength training the next. Every day you are in the gym, at home or on your lunch break doing some form of activity, you will have results. For most people this works great because it becomes a healthy habit and gets you quickly on track. <br />
<br />
Or try a 3 day per week routine (it may work into your schedule better). This would be an hour every other day – use half the hour for cardio and the other half for weights. You cannot miss… either plan is a small commitment for the overall BIG picture!<br />
<br />
Eat Breakfast: When trying to loose body fat, you cannot skip breakfast! Try starting your day with a Meal Replacement Shake. It is an easy to do, affordable weight-loss method that will help rev up your metabolism. It will also help build lean muscle and lean muscle helps melt away unwanted fat. <br />
<br />
*According to Dr. Oz “Meal-replacement shakes are an effective, easy way to drop pounds. They teach you how to eat less and lose weight quickly and permanently” <br />
<br />
Increase movement: If you are not making it to the gym then make the gym come to you. 100/100 is an easy way to increase movement and supports weight loss. Pick two exercises you can perform at home or in your office break room. Example - squats and pushups. All you need to do is 100 of each throughout the day. You can start out with 10 or 20 at a time until you reach 100. There really is nothing else to it; 100/100! (You can do pushups from the edge of a table and then move to the ground to increase difficulty and when squats become too easy, turn them into jump squats).<br />
<br />
Get help and support: This can make or break your success. If you want to get the best results and have lasting ones, you need a coach or a support group that can help you reach your goals. If you belong to a health club ask if there are any first time training specials. Get professional help with a fitness program designed specifically for you. You can do the research on your own; however, this is not the best use of your time. <br />
<br />
If you are not a member of a health club, find out if there is a trainer in your area that will travel to your home. This can be a little more affordable because you are not paying for club cost and over head. If you choose to work out at home, you need to be self motivated. Try finding a work out partner, someone that will help motivate and hold you accountable! <br />

Welcome 2014!! I am excited to be part of the New Year, New You Challenge for 2014 with Optimal Health Chiropractic. <br />
My name is Laurie Escott and I am the owner of Total Health Solutions, a local company in the Snoqualmie Valley. I am here to help you find solutions and inspire you to create a healthier you!<br />
<br />
So… just where do we start and how do we take that first step? Finding a workable solution that will fit our health and wellness needs takes patience and most of all understanding. I honestly believe the more we know about something, the easier it is to accept it and then ultimately change it. Total Health Solutions is about exploring possibilities and then creating a healthier you using simple and sensible idea and techniques. <br />
<br />
The idea I’m thinking about today is about “Creating Balance”. How can we find balance and then... how can we keep it? OK, so we all know that the balance of life seems to bounce around like a moving target, ever changing and shifting. How do we manage this moving target anyway? I’d like to suggest some tips for you to try this week as you challenge yourself to find a new you, in this New Year. <br />
<br />
The first rule of thumb is to remember “Creating Balance” is about progress, not perfection. It takes time to slow down the moving target. It’s about understanding the body, mind and spirit connection. <br />
<br />
Take a moment now and try these simple tips. <br />
<br />
Body tip - Drink more water, more often.<br />
Question? What is your favorite way to drink water? It may be in a glass, a water bottle with a pop top or maybe a straw. Maybe you like your water to be room temp or freezing cold. One of the first things I ask my clients to discover is about the love/hate relationship they have with their water container. I know it may seem silly but just think about it for a while, try some different styles, drink your water at diffident temps and find the one you really really like. The results will impress you; you will drink more water with ease. In turn your body will be able to work better for you. <br />
<br />
Mind tip – Breathe in and slow down your thoughts. <br />
Questions? What does your breath feel like? Is it cool or warm? Does it stop at your chest or flow down into your belly? Connect to your breath by a wearing a simple wristband. Every time you see the band, take a breath in and examine it. Get in touch with your breath. This will help to reduce stress and train your brain to not get caught up in endless mind chatter. The moving target of balance will begin to shift and level out as you explore the breath.<br />
<br />
Spirit tip – Check in with your heart today.<br />
Question? Can you feel the beat? Practice quieting yourself enough so you can actually hear your heart beat. It’s a pretty cool experience! Now open your ears and just listen quietly. You might even ask a question to the heart such as… What changes are best for me this year and then wait and listen for the answer. Note: Have a pen and paper handy and be ready because you never know what the message might be!<br />
